Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 8-15-2020
Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
When we were children, we all probably liked to be first in line. When we were in school we probably got into single file at the drinking fountain on a hot day waiting for a drink of ice cold water. If someone cut in line how mad we would get even if we knew we would all get the same amount of water when all was said and done. No one got anything that anyone else was not going to get.
The Feast of the Assumption is about Mary being taken Body and Soul to heaven at the end of her time on earth. What privilege did she have they we won’t? She was first in a long line. She was the first person after Jesus to share in the experience of resurrection.
We say that no corruption touched the body of Mary when she died. She was assumed body and soul to heaven. But did she receive anything that we will not ultimately receive?
If we know Christian teaching, we know that at the end of time all believers will share in the resurrection. Our bodies will be reunited with our souls. We will be glorified. All corruption will disappear. We will have the privilege that Mary enjoyed.
The Feast of the Assumption is as much about us as Mary. We need this hopeful sign right now don’t we. There is so much death all around us that we need to be reminded that death will not have the last word. We can be confident in the Lord.
Reflection Questions:
- Do I see Mary’s Assumption as connected to the resurrection of Jesus? Why is that important?
- Do I see my body as sacred? Do I believe that one day my body will be glorified, and I will live body and soul for all eternity?
Dear Parishioners,
We are having sign up for religious education classes this weekend. We are trying to gage the level of participation that we can expect. Our children’s religious education is extremely important. At the same time, we know that gathering in groups is still a concern. We will try to conduct our classes with the best protocols we can so that our children can be safe.
If you want to register your children, please do so today. We will be enrolling preschool through 8th grade students. We hope to begin classes sometime the beginning of October. If you are not at Mass this weekend you can always register your children online or by calling our office and leaving a message for our Director of Religious Education, Debbie Patronagio.
May all the Angels and Saints watch over you today.
Fr. Mark
